Expanded Multi-layers Drying Equipment for Pre-Dried Raw Materials of Puff Snacks (Indonesia)

Industrial dry pellet dryers and extrusion snack drying equipment for food processing plants in Taiwan and Asia

In puff snack production, the stability of moisture content in pre-dried pellet raw materials directly affects subsequent expansion performance and overall product yield. During actual mass production, many food manufacturers face issues such as uneven drying, excessively long drying times, or poor energy efficiency, creating a need for more reliable food machinery drying solutions.

In this case, a fluidized bed dryer was introduced to optimize the process based on the characteristics of puff snack pre-dried pellets. This allowed the materials to receive uniform heat during drying, effectively shortening drying time and improving overall production line stability. Such food drying equipment solutions are particularly suitable for puff snack mass-production facilities, helping manufacturers achieve both consistent product quality and high production efficiency.

Capacity Expansion Requirements of a Multinational Food Group

One of Indonesia's most representative multinational food groups, with operations spanning multiple countries, maintains production and sales sites across Asia, Africa, the Middle East, and Europe. The group features a well-structured internal organization, with dedicated teams responsible for overseas market expansion and large-scale equipment project management. Its procurement and acceptance systems are highly mature, with exceptionally high standards for equipment stability, data consistency, and long-term operational performance.

As multiple plants within the group expanded their production capacity simultaneously, the existing drying equipment gradually became unable to support actual production demands. Some of the equipment had been in service for over twenty years, resulting in reduced drying efficiency as well as increasing maintenance costs and management burdens. These factors prompted the customer to formally initiate a new round of equipment replacement and capacity upgrade plans.

From Long-Term Collaboration to a Formal Tendering Process

The cooperation betweenTsung Hsing(TSHS) and the group can be traced back to 2007, beginning with overseas potato chip production line projects. Tsung Hsing(TSHS) supported the deployment of production lines at overseas sites such as Syria and Nigeria. Through the accumulation of proven performance and trust across multiple multinational projects,Tsung Hsing(TSHS)'s equipment and technical documentation were gradually recommended to the group's Indonesian headquarters, leading to a formal invitation to participate in the new round of equipment tendering.

This project was led by the customer’s headquarters, focusing on the replacement of production lines at its Indonesian main facility. Through an international public tender process—from equipment specification documents, technical and specification meetings, and quotation reviews to final decisions by senior procurement management—the overall process was rigorous and conducted under tight timelines. For the customer, equipment suppliers were required not only to meet specifications but also to demonstrate the capability and experience to support large-scale projects over the long term. Ultimately, Tsung Hsing (TSHS) stood out amid strong competition and was awarded a large-scale integrated project covering drying and frying equipment.

Simultaneous Deployment of Multiple Machines to Support Multi-Plant Production Lines

To support the Indonesian food industry leader's expansion of production lines for puff snack raw materials (pre-dried pellets), we assisted the group in overcoming the key challenges of transitioning from aging equipment to high-efficiency production lines. In the highly competitive snack food market, the group faced three major production pain points:

● Aging equipment and energy losses: Existing drying equipment had been in service for over 20 to 30 years, resulting in frequent maintenance needs and low energy efficiency, which drove up operating costs.
● Prolonged drying cycles: The limited performance of legacy equipment meant that process speeds could no longer keep pace with the growing global market demand for higher production capacity.
● International quality standards: As a multinational industry leader, the customer maintains exceptionally high requirements for temperature precision and consistency of final moisture content. Any process deviation could impact the quality and texture of the finished products.

Integration of High-Efficiency Fluidized Bed Steam Drying and Frying Systems

In response to the large-scale capacity expansion strategy of a major Indonesian food manufacturer, Tsung Hsing (TSHS) provided a customized integrated solution consisting of four fluidized bed steam dryers and one Model 602 continuous fryer, designed to meet the production requirements of multiple plants. From a technical implementation perspective, the system adopts a recirculating drying design, ensuring that raw materials are evenly and consistently heated within the equipment until the moisture content is precisely reduced to the benchmark quality range specified by the customer. Taking into account the physical characteristics of pre-dried pellet materials and the high-load demands of long-term operation, the engineering team further optimized the conveyor drive mechanism. This effectively eliminated the risks of belt slippage or material jamming during operation, ensuring uninterrupted continuous operation of 8 to 10 hours per batch and maintaining high production line utilization.

For large food groups, this type of one-time, centralized replacement of aging equipment not only establishes standardized production modules—bringing process parameters across different plants into greater alignment—but also significantly reduces the complexity of maintenance and management. The quantified results after introducing the new generation of equipment were substantial. According to customer feedback, the drying time per batch was reduced by approximately 2 to 3 hours compared to legacy systems. This improvement not only greatly enhanced energy utilization efficiency but also provided more flexible capacity support for the group's future rapid expansion in overseas markets.

Precise Moisture Content Control through a Recirculating Drying Design

The equipment in this project is primarily applied to the drying process of puff snack raw materials, with the core objective of maintaining moisture content consistently within the range specified by the customer. Given the extended drying duration, a recirculating drying design is adopted, allowing the product to continuously cycle through the system until the actual moisture content reaches the target level before the drying process is completed.
The overall equipment configuration is integrated using a modular architecture, ensuring that manufacturing and delivery can be completed on schedule even under tight lead-time requirements. At the same time, to enhance operational management efficiency, Tsung Hsing (TSHS) also provides an intelligent monitoring system as part of the project package, enabling the customer to monitor equipment operating conditions in real time.

According to feedback from the company's project manager, the introduction of the new-generation equipment resulted in significant improvements in production line performance:

Rigorous Acceptance Standards and On-Site Adjustment Challenges

After the equipment was installed on site, the project’s greatest challenge stemmed from the customer’s extremely stringent acceptance process. Using their own measurement instruments, the customer repeatedly calibrated multiple temperature and moisture measurement points, requiring all data to fall within specified tolerance ranges. Due to subtle differences in actual airflow and on-site conditions, communication costs during the initial acceptance phase were relatively high. In addition, under the high-load conditions of long-duration batch recirculating drying, the stability of the conveying system became a critical factor. If a batch could not be completed in full, the raw materials would be rendered unusable, placing significant pressure on both acceptance results and production risk management.

In response to actual operating conditions, the Tsung Hsing (TSHS) team carried out multiple real-time adjustments. During the second phase, technical personnel with expertise in system control and programming were dispatched on site, enabling direct modification of control logic and display methods based on measurement results so that actual data more closely aligned with the customer’s acceptance standards. At the same time, improvements were made to the conveying mechanism to address drive and slippage issues, ensuring that each batch drying cycle could be completed smoothly. Regarding the human–machine interface, the team also refined the functional layout, retaining only the display information that provided real value to the customer’s operations.

Training and Documentation Support to Accelerate Equipment Commissioning

Given the tight project schedule, TSHS provided not only on-site operational training but also a complete set of equipment assembly videos, operation presentations, and principle explanation materials. These resources helped the customer’s operators quickly understand the equipment structure and operating logic. Through this combination of documentation and visual materials, the learning curve was significantly shortened while reducing the risk of operational errors and maintenance issues in the future.

From a Single Project to a Long-Term Strategic Partnership

From the perspective of the group’s overall deployment, there remains strong potential for future expansion. The customer continues to plan new factories and production lines across multiple countries, adopting joint venture or wholly owned operating models in accordance with local regulations. The stable performance achieved through this equipment implementation has positioned Tsung Hsing (TSHS) as a key partner for future capacity expansion and new product development. This project was not merely an equipment delivery, but a comprehensive validation of project management, engineering integration, and international acceptance capabilities, laying a critical foundation for Tsung Hsing (TSHS)’s professional standing within the large multinational food group market.
